Delegation of the civil institutions in Saida and the camps meets the general director of UNRWA
The civil institutions operating in the Palestinian medium in Saida and its camps held a long meeting with Mr. Mathews Shmali, the general director of UNRWA in Lebanon and the relief coordinator for the Palestinian displaced from Syria.
In addition Dr. Ibrahim Al Khatib the director of Sidon area at the main office of UNRWA in Beirut in order to discuss the hazards and risks resulting from reducing the services of UNRWA and the actions taken against the refugees from the Palestinian camps in Syria.
The meeting started by focusing on the importance of the United Nations for Relief and works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) which is considered as a witness on the Palestinian problem in general and on the continual suffering of the Palestinian refugees due to the Israel occupation and not to return to their land.
And the seriousness of the actions taken or could be taken by UNRWA under the excuse of sacral budget, and the fears posed by these procedures, including the curricular decline as a prelude to end the Palestinian problem.
The delegation which included directors and representatives of Palestinian associations operating in the Palestinian medium stressed that this international organization was established to meet the needs of Palestinian refugees until they return to the land which they were expelled from, and the delegation was surprised because of talking about the budget deficit at a time when billions are spittoon armaments and armed conflicts.
The delegation also points out towards the repercussions of the cuts on the humanitarian, social, economic, educational and health levels. Since the cuts will deepen the Palestinian sufferings that’s have already reached without these cuts to the very sharp levels, considering that duty of asking the donor countries is related to the UNRWA only.
With regards to the cuts related with the displaced from the Palestinian refugee camps in Syria, the delegation presented an intervention explaining the situations of the displaced people and the consequence if the UNRWA not retreat from its decisions.
In turn, Mr. Mathews expressed his satisfaction about the meeting with the delegation of the institutions, emphasizing on the importance of communication with the institutions of civil society because of the interest gained on the level of integration between UNRWA and the civil institutions operating in the Palestinian medium, then he gave an explanation about the budget of UNRWA and its resources. He Frankly told the delegation that the degree of disability will reach to zero in the bank credit of UNRWA unless the deficit won’t be treated by the donor countries.
At the end of the meeting, which lasted about an hour, the Palestinian delegation submitted a memorandum confirms the importance holding on the UNRWA and demands it to retreat from its decisions about the cuts because of the great and serious risks on the Palestinian refugees.
